It’s a back-to-the-basics workshop, focused on pencil drawing techniques. You see, in my early years as an urban sketcher, I didn’t want to waste time studying the fundamentals of drawing. The site eventually fell into decay and became a wasteland, a place known for prostitution, drugs and illegal clubs. I’ll tell you why I am here in a second, but first, here’s a new roundup of inspiring sketching news: Live from the opera On November 4, during a general rehearsal of the opera “Robert Devereux” at the legendary Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla, 60 sketchers used small lamps - [Veni, vidi, sketched it](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/bullitt-fireplace-sketch/) - Hoping for a colorful mountain scene during this morning’s trail run with Ben and Ahmed, I decided to carry my iPad in my backpack. Unfortunately, the rain and clouds didn’t cooperate but my running buddies introduced me to a cool historic landmark on Squak Mountain: The fireplace remnants of an old cabin once owned by - [Why I quit fountain pens (for a while) and picked a Bic pen](https://gabrielcampanario.com/tools/why-i-quit-using-fountain-pens-most-of-the-time-and-picked-up-a-bic-pen/) - Earlier in my urban sketching years, I thought I had discovered the holy grail when I saw people drawing with fountain pens. That's how it's done, I told myself. Fountain pens, especially those with flexible nibs, create thin and thick strokes that can make a sketch more expressive and lively. The problem with fountain pens, - [IKEA scenes sketched with Procreate Pocket app](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/ikea-scenes-sketched-with-procreate-pocket-app/) - Here are a couple of sketches I made at IKEA using a Wacom Stylus and the Procreate Pocket app on my iPhone. I took license with the color, going with the company’s signature blue and yellow, instead of the actual colors. Can urban sketching get any more convenient? - [Jumping into a drawing while my friends jump into a lake](https://gabrielcampanario.com/pocket-sketchbook/jumping-into-a-drawing-while-my-friends-jump-into-a-lake/) - Glacials melt directly into this alpine lake in the North Cascades. The water is ice-cold. But that didn't stop my friends Ahmed and Ben from jumping for a swim after a 5-mile run up to this gorgeous piece of wilderness. I took a pass on swimming and jumped into sketching instead. As I observed the scene, - [A sketcher's take from Bothell workshop](https://gabrielcampanario.com/videos/sketchers-take-on-bothell/) - Here's a nice souvenir from the workshop I taught in Bothell this past weekend: a video-collage shared by workshop participant Karen Hoelscher, of Bellingham. Now the iPhone version of the app is very similar to the iPad app. You can’t use the Apple Pencil with it, but still, wow! Here's a link to a story about it and some - [From sketch to illustration](https://gabrielcampanario.com/process/from-sketch-to-illustration/) - I recently redrew one of my pocket sketchbook drawings to illustrate one of my Seattle Times posts. Here's the sketch, done on location and colored afterwards from memory. And here's the new version drawn on the iPad with the Procreate app. This was an interesting experiment, but I'm unsure I will try it again. - [Hello Brick House](https://gabrielcampanario.com/videos/hello-brick-house/) - Sitting on the grass in front of my father-in-law’s house. It's a common question among artists and drawing enthusiasts. If you follow my work, you may also be curious about the tools I use. My answer to the "pen question," as I like to call it, has changed over the years. When I started out, I - [Up close with the Mayan Queen](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/up-close-with-the-mayan-queen/) - [Taking light and shade for a ride](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/taking-light-and-shade-for-a-ride/) - I had a productive evening commute sketching on my iPhone today. This 30-minute portrait with ProCreate Pocket is the result of just a few glances at a fellow commuter sitting at an angle across from me, therefore it doesn't quite resemble what he really looked like. It was mostly an exercise in capturing the contrast - [Pixels over coffee](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/pixels-over-coffee/) - [Taking ProCreate Pocket for a ride](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/taking-procreate-pocket-for-a-ride/) - So I've discovered that the iPad app I use for my digital urban sketching and illustrations (ProCreate) also has a pocket version for iPhone! How could I resist! Here are some of the digital pocket sketches I've done with it so far during my commute. (Sketched with a Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus.) - [Same boat, different takes](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/same-boat-different-takes/) - I rarely sketch the same subject twice, let alone three times, over a short period of time. But that’s what happened recently when I drew the Arthur Foss, a historic tugboat moored on Seattle’s Lake Union. What does it mean that I drew the same boat three times within just a few weeks!? It’s easy - [A taste of California in the U-District](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/a-taste-of-california-in-the-u-district/) - International burger chain CaliBurger opened its first Seattle location last fall. It’s on University Way Northeast, the popular U-District arterial better known as the Ave. My son and I were around the area a few Sundays ago and gave it a try. The burgers and fries were really tasty. The shakes, not so much. The - [Extremadura via iPad](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/extremadura-via-ipad/) - I made these sketches just a couple of weeks ago while visiting family in Spain. They show the 900-year-old ruins of a castle in Montemolin, a tiny village in Extremadura where my parents were born and returned to after decades living in Barcelona. I used the Procreate app and a Wacom Intuos Stylus on an - [Seattle Sketcher, in book form](https://gabrielcampanario.com/books/seattle-sketcher-in-book-form/) - Here's a peek inside my Seattle Times book, in case you don't have your own copy yet. My favorite thing about it: The sketches appear much larger and sharper than in newsprint, and many include the marginal notes and color splashes that I usually remove before publication. That's one aspect about the book noted in - [The legacy of illustrator Miroslav Sasek](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/the-legacy-of-illustrator-miroslav-sasek/) - Miroslav Sasek, a Czech-born artist, was trained as an architect and made a career in children's literature with books that depict city life around the world. Being an urban sketcher, it's impossible not to find Sasek's charming renditions of buildings, cars and city dwellers so inspiring. According to the fan site "This is M. Sasek" - [Sneak preview of The Urban Sketching Handbook](https://gabrielcampanario.com/books/2705-2/) - My handbook on Architecture sketching isn't out until Oct. 15, but here's a look at an early copy I received from the nice folks at Quarry Books. I think it looks great! I love how the designers have packaged the book. (A shout-out to Quarry Books' art directors and the designers at StudioInk.) The main six chapters offer my - [A treasure trove of Life magazines online](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/a-treasure-trove-of-life-magazines-online/) - I have a bunch of old Life magazines at home that I've been browsing recently in search of inspiration. Whenever I find work that catches my eye, I mark it with a post-it note. Here's an example: An article written and illustrated by Bill Mauldin, the creator of the award-winning "Willie and Joe" cartoon chronicling the - [I see sinking ships](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/i-see-sinking-ships/) - I first heard of a "sinking ship" building in reference to a Seattle parking garage built on a sloping street near the iconic Smith Tower. When you look at it straight on, the building resembles the bow of a ship sinking into the street. The optical effect is the result of a tricky perspective, the - [Let one watercolor a day flow](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/one-watercolor-a-day/) - As far as drawing techniques go, watercolor can be really frustrating. As soon as the paint hits the paper, it seems to take a life of its own. Wait for it to dry, and the results may be far from what you intended. Before the frustration makes you reconsider the medium, I recommend that you - [The awesome sketchbook of comic book artist Joshua Boulet](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/the-awesome-sketchbook-of-comic-book-artist-joshua-boulet/) - Joshua Boulet is a comic book artist, illustrator and sketcher originally from Texas whose work I just discovered a few months ago. I was particularly captivated by his self-published, 130-page book, Draw Occupy Wall Street, a graphic memoir he inked while living at Zuccoti Park, the epicenter of the Occupy movement in New York City. The best - [Keys to Drawing](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/keys-to-drawing/) - I often check out art instruction books from my neighborhood library. But I never spend enough time with any one in particular before they are due back. Keys to Drawing, however, has me hooked from the start. I'm enjoying it so much I may just end up buying a copy to own. Dodson emphasizes a fundamental - [The journalistic illustrations of Robert Weaver](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/2649-2/) - The late Robert Weaver is known for his journalistic approach to illustration. The artwork he published in magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Life and Esquire was based on sketches he drew on the field. This week I especially thought of Weaver's work when I was making some behind-the-scenes sketches of Opening Day at Safeco Field - [The Melton Prior Institute for Reportage Drawing & Printing Culture](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/the-melton-prior-institute-for-reportage-drawing-printing-culture/) - I recently discovered the existence of an institute dedicated to reportage drawing: The Melton Prior Institute. It is named after Melton Prior, an English artist who worked for the London Illustrated News back in the days before photography, when newspapers relied on artists to produce visual records of news events. The institute's website is a gold mine of resources - [Urban sketching as creative fuel](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/urban-sketching-as-creative-fuel/) - Urban sketching is mostly a hobby, but it can also benefit many people in their professional occupations. In his new book, Freehand Drawing and Discovery ($65, Wiley & Sons), urban designer and educator Jim Richards gives urban sketching his stamp of approval as a tool that can help architects, urban designers and creative professionals throughout their careers. - [The spirit of urban sketching](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/the-spirit-of-urban-sketching/) - The way I see it, being an urban sketcher isn't merely about drawing cities, big or small, urban or rural, with a pen or with your fingers on an digital tablet. It's about drawing places that can be put on a map, and everything that happens in those places. It's about showing the world with - [Rendered Rooms: The Art of Mike Daikubara](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/rendered-rooms-the-art-of-mike-daikubara/) - Urban sketching enthusiasts relish the opportunity to draw a new city while on vacation or on a business trip. Mike Daikubara, an industrial designer based in Boston, took up the hobby in 2000 and is no exception. But he also likes to add another dimension to his travel sketching. At whatever hotel he stays for - [NYT op-art by Jason Polan](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/nyt-op-art-by-jason-polan/) - The New York Times includes contributions from artists in its Opinion pages, a practice I wish many newspapers followed. These contributions are called "Op-Art" and consist of artwork that stands by itself, unlike the usual spot illustrations used to accompany articles. You can say that in the "op-art" pieces, the artist is the columnist. The - [Goya: 'I'm still learning'](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/goya-im-still-learning/) - Reading Goya's biography by Robert Hughes, I came across this exceptional black chalk drawing by the Spanish painter. Goya made the drawing not long before he died in 1828 at age 82. That's an unusual longevity for its time, which makes what he wrote in the drawing even more remarkable: "Aun aprendo." ("I'm still learning.") The drawing - [Artists & Illustrators Magazine](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/artists-illustrators-magazine/) - Fellow urban sketcher James Hobbs asked me a few questions for an article he published in the summer issue of Artists & Illustrators magazine. Mainly, he wanted to know what was my original aim creating Urban Sketchers and whether I've been suprised by the rapid growth of the group. Lots of people ask me the same question, so I - [The BBOOOOOOKKKK!!!](https://gabrielcampanario.com/books/the-bbooooookkkk/) - The title of this post comes from the subject line of an e-mail I received yesterday from my sketcher friend Teresa Lawson in Port Townsend, WA. Her excitement about The Art of Urban Sketching makes me realize that it was all worth the effort! I hope the book will inspire many artists like Teresa to keep sketching - [The art of Paul Madonna](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/the-art-of-paul-madonna/) - San Francisco-based artist Paul Madonna is the author of "All Over Coffee," a drawn feature that runs every Sunday in the San Francisco Chronicle. His beautiful drawings of San Francisco's cityscapes, which he makes on location, sitting on a fold-up stool, were one of the things that inspired me to pitch Seattle Sketcher to my art editors at The Seattle Times in - [Sylvia Plath, urban sketcher](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/sylvia-plath-urban-sketcher/) - I'm not familiar with Sylvia Plath's writing, but I just learned that the acclaimed American poet was also an urban sketcher. The Telegraph announces that a selection of her drawings will be exhibited for the first time at The Mayor Gallery in London, Nov. 2 through Dec. 16. The slideshow of Plath's sketches posted by the british newspaper shows the - [61 ways to put your life into a Moleskine](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/61-ways-to-put-your-life-into-a-moleskine/) - People use Moleskine notebooks for all sorts of things. They take notes, doodle, glue receipts and even create three-dimensional paper sculptures out of their pages. Many artists and sketchers also swear by their Moleskines. Their format and portability makes them ideal for urban sketching. You can whip them out of your pocket at any given moment to - [Interview on Portuguese TV show](https://gabrielcampanario.com/videos/interview-on-portuguese-tv-show/) - During the 2nd Urban Sketching Symposium in Lisbon in 2011, I was interviewed for Espaços e Casas, a Portuguese TV broadcast about real estate, architecture, interior design and public spaces. - [Q&A with drawing professor Frank Ching](https://gabrielcampanario.com/inspiration/2714-2/) - During our monthly sketchcrawls in Seattle, Frank Ching is just another drawing enthusiast, passing his sketchbook around, giving feedback, asking questions and sharing the jovial atmosphere. But when you see his work, you realize that Frank is no accidental sketcher. Over 35 years, he has taught generations of architects how to draw and has written numerous best-selling books about - [Interview with El País: Cómo mirar a través de un lápiz](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/interview-with-el-pais-como-mirar-a-traves-de-un-lapiz/) - Discovering this article and video in El País today was like unwrapping a Christmas gift that got lost under the tree. I organized the story into different groups of illustrators - [Urban Sketchers blog captures city life around the world](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/urban-sketchers-blog-captures-city-life-around-the-world/) - Talented artist-correspondents from around the globe will share their sketchbooks starting Nov. 1 at www.urbansketchers.com, a new group blog that will showcase drawings from the city streets on at least four different continents. From dynamic cities like London, Moscow, Barcelona, New York, San Francisco, Lisbon, São Paulo and Tokyo, Urban Sketchers portray metropolitan life — from - [Capturing the urban life around you](https://gabrielcampanario.com/pocket-sketchbook/capturing-the-urban-life-around-you/) - It's been a month or so since I started the Flickr group urban sketches. So far, we've got more than 100 members and near 400 drawings have been submitted from places as diverse as Tokyo, León in Spain, or Santa Fe in New Mexico, U.S., and many other places. Someone in Moscow who wants to contribute said it's too cold to sketch out - [Urban sketches at Flickr](https://gabrielcampanario.com/uncategorized/urban-sketches-at-flickr/) - I enjoy drawing the streets and the people of Seattle. And I enjoy seeing other artists' sketches of their own cities just as much. So I started a Flickr group as a one-stop place for all the urban scenes that we enjoy documenting on our sketchbooks: urban sketches. "Not Quite Your Average Bus Stop," read The Seattle Times article announcing its opening. "From Interstate 5, it looks like the Ringling Brothers have pitched their tents just south of the Northgate shopping mall," wrote reporter Bob Lane. Today, the once-bustling shelter stands rather lonesome. Passenger service has shifted to the bus loop next to the new light rail station. Buses still roll through for layovers, but no-one hops on and off anymore. If you ever boarded one of those blue or green streak buses here, you probably have this whimsical bus stop etched into your memory.
