I’m excited to share that I’ll be leading more urban sketching tours while I’m in Europe later this month and early October. The first stop is Berlin on September 19!

If you know sketchers in Germany who might enjoy joining, I’d be grateful if you passed the word along. My tours include a presentation and a demo of sketching techniques.

Berlin Revisited: Alexanderplatz
Thirty-five years ago this month, during a Eurail trip through Eastern Europe as a college student, I spent a busy day in Berlin. The flag of a united Germany already waved from the Reichstag, though reunification was still weeks away. Sections of the Berlin Wall still stood, and souvenir hunters chipped pieces away to sell. I bought one myself and stood on the rubble, trying to take it all in.
I’m excited to return now, this time to share my drawing techniques and historical research during an urban sketching tour at Alexanderplatz — a site where hundreds of thousands once gathered to peacefully demand change just days before the wall came down. My memory of this location includes posing for photo in front of a masterful piece of art that has stood the test of time, the triumphant Neptune fountain designed by Reinhold Begas in 1891.
